Why Does the United States Celebrate Flag Day – Know thy History!

Must read

Why Flag Day?

On June 14th, 1777 a resolution was passed by the Second Continental Congress to have an Official United States flag.

The resolution stated that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

The US national flag, was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes and was later known as the “stars and stripes”.

History behind Flag Day?

Many historical figures led the charge to recognize the importance of the Flag Day.

These include the Hartford, Conn., resident George Morris in 1861, a Wisconsin teacher Bernard Cigrand who was a famous figure who later became the editor-in-chief of the “American Standard,” a magazine devoted to American emblems and many more patriots like these.

The Department of Defense said in a blog post that Flag Day was unofficially observed on June 14, 1877.

Legend has it that a Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross designed the new canton for the flag, which consisted of a circle of 13 stars and a blue background, at the request of General George Washington. Although historians have been unable to conclusively prove this.

With the addition of new states to the United States after independence, new stripes and stars were added to represent the states added to the Union. In 1818, however, Congress enacted a law stipulating that the 13 original stripes be restored and that only stars be added to represent new states.

On June 14, 1877, the first Flag Day observance was held on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the American flag. As instructed by Congress, the U.S. flag was flown from all public buildings across the country. In the years after the first Flag Day, several states continued to observe the anniversary, and in 1949 Congress officially designated June 14 as Flag Day, a national day of observance.

When did the Flag Day become Official?

It was in May 30, 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson  proclaimed that “I therefore suggest and request that throughout the nation and if possible in every community the fourteenth day of June be observed as Flag Day with special patriotic exercises,”

During this day most military and veteran organizations organize events fundraisers and remember the “stars & stripes” flag of the United States of America that stands for Freedom, Unity and Equality for all.
